Sorting out my Blog, day
I have not successfully checked out my 'followers' blogs & intend to do just that.
Well easily said than done... as we can expect nothing ever goes smoothly where computers are concerned.
I tried to comment to 'Net11cieart.blogspot.com...not sure what happened but I was not able to leave my comment... can't tell why.
I successfully managed to leave comments on my second and 3rd followers sites. One of the followers is using wordpress and the other the online journal.
I then attempted to fix my blog. It is way too long.
I managed to master the 'click to read more' option under the header. It is not exactly what I want but it's progress.
I only want the headings to show on my main page ... I am paranoid though that I will delete the wrong stuff.
I realise that I should be doing my tasks instead but finding it hard to move on and leave this mess behind.
I will also try to go back to my email list that I joined a week ago... not sure if I remember the address or password I used. I would also like to mention that I have a twitter account and following Peter.

Module Two - Tasks (Lists & Chat)
I am starting a new blog and hope to be able to link it to my main one.
What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?
When you join an email lists, you are one of many and your message goes to everyone on that list. There could be 10,000's participating. It's easy to lose the thread of the main subject. Sometime it feels as if you are talking to yourself. It likes any new bit of software, once you get used to it, it's not so bad.
Where as the discussion board is more structured and controlled. There are many groups and specific subjects. It too can get very messy though. There can be so many topics, subjects and the subject matter is not always clear. Users in both cases have to be taught to follow some basic rules and guidelines prior to contributing to either.
Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?
The email list, is more open and public. I don't think there is much difference with either. If there are rules and guidelines put in place and communicated to the subscribers, either one could be used for similar purposes. The discussion board can perhaps be more structured and managed as per the discussion board used in the NET11 unit. I cannot imagine using a list or lists as a substitute. The discussion board is divided into different sections and specific subjects. But as with the lists, if the discussion board is not used properly, it too can get very messy after a very short time, as we have experienced in the discussion board of this unit. There should be much thought put into the meta-data, (subject) field. It should be obvious and link to what the content is all about. This would save everyone involved, a lot of time and worry. I don't like using the email lists, perhaps it's because that I am not familiar with it, and I find it not as conveying specific messages, as it is on the discussion board.
Conclusion
The list has not contributed anything in helping me with the unit. It is just an exercise that I had to do. I have done it, I know it exists and will probably never use it again. After a week, I have 53 emails in my inbox and ended up deleting the lot, as none were really helpful.
After having being away for a week, with no internet communication, and accessing the email list when I got back, I find it very confusing and messy. Whereas the discussion board, although it contained so many posts, I managed to access the different topics/subjects that I required, and found it quite helpful. It seems that we have had the freedom to add to the DB in this unit as we thought fit, (initially). Perhaps it was a way of letting us find out how messy it could get in a very short time. I wonder if it would have made any difference, if we had read the Introduction in Module 2.1 before being able to post anything onto the DB. Although it about how we communicate using emails, the same rules would apply to the DB.
Chat
I managed to download ICQ and used it successfully. I was a bit concerned posting again, my personal details on the internet. I have so many accounts by now, I need a database to keep track of names, nicknames, passwords, answers to questions.. eg: pets name, that I have used.
I added all the ICQ contact nos. I could find on the DB, about 14 of them. I managed to discuss a few things with Fady and Michelle who were online at the time.
I was quite easy to use and I would like to explore it further. Perhaps set up a group for NET11 2009, that is if someone else does not beat me to it.
I think that ICQ is a good communication tool to use but when chatting to many it get a little out of control. There were 3 of us and even then that got a little messy.
I did enjoy chatting to some of my fellow students... as if belonging to a private club.
The feedback from the others was that Fady preferred IRC to ICQ... I don't remember why and I cannot find the history in ICQ for the time being.
I prefer using skype for the only reason that I use it all the time, and got used to it. I use it for my work and to contact friends. I call & chat to people from all over the world, and it is always reliable. I have tried MSN live and find this not as good. The connection is often broken after only a few minutes.
The following is a screen dump of some of the stuff we discussed.
497-680-589 (5:17 PM): hey 585-583-538 (5:17 PM): hey hey 497-680-589 (5:18 PM): Hi Zette 497-680-589 (5:18 PM): ok lets knock this one on the head 585-583-538 (5:18 PM): i agree.. hi zette ! 497-680-589 (5:18 PM): So which out of the chat options did you like the most? 585-583-538 (5:19 PM): ICQ is cool.. though IRC isn't without its charm 585-583-538 (5:19 PM): what bout you? 497-680-589 (5:19 PM): For me personally I like Msn, I like that I have control over who I speak to and who I don't and while its similar to icq because I use hotmail a lot its easier for me Zette (5:20 PM): I am here Zette (5:20 PM): Hi 497-680-589 (5:20 PM): I like irq but I find I get spammed more 585-583-538 (5:20 PM): excellent Zette (5:20 PM): who i am talking to 585-583-538 (5:20 PM): fady and mich 497-680-589 (5:20 PM): I am Michelle Robson from NEt11 497-680-589 (5:20 PM): And Fady is Fady 497-680-589 (5:20 PM): lol 585-583-538 (5:20 PM): from net11 585-583-538 (5:20 PM): 497-680-589 (5:21 PM): Zette (5:21 PM): Hi Great,, just got home. How do we prove that? 585-583-538 (5:21 PM): well.... 497-680-589 (5:21 PM): Blogg referencing 585-583-538 (5:21 PM): screenshot! 497-680-589 (5:22 PM): put it on ye blog 585-583-538 (5:22 PM): yes Zette (5:22 PM):
I also chatted to blue banana later that night. I am trying to retrieve the history to add to this chat task, but cannot find it, although I opted to save it. I am sure it there but prefer not to waste any more time.
I have left a few messages on the DB for anyone who would want to chat. I have my ICQ, Messenger and Skype up & running.
I created perhaps too late, a NET11 - 2009 group in ICQ. It was very easy, but I could not find a way to automatically transfer my existing contacts to the group. Doing it one by one is a very manual way of doing it.
There are so many ways of staying in touch nowadays but do we stay in touch?
The older generation struggles with the internet use, some who have worked in a computer environment embrace it. For the new generation, the internet seems to be the only way to communicate. How can I (being of an older group) possibly keep up with the following:
Blogger
Skype
Messenger
ICQ
My work emails
Hotmail
MSN live
Yahoo mail
Curtin student email
Email lists
Gmail
Mobile phone
SMS
Home phone
... all of this is taking control of my life. Soon, very soon I will have to take control ... if I did not it will control me. !!!!!!!!!!! I am sure there is more I could add to the list Huuuuuuuu!!!!!
Yes, what about all the different names, passwords I use. I am running out of pet names. I have passwords and login name for banks accounts, credit cards (4), Tickertek, Woolworths, Geni (family tree online), Everyday rewards, webjet, go to meeting, Mycareer to name just a few.
My problem is I use my second name and sign using my first name...... this is my first problem. Mine may be a bit more complicated than most but I think most of us have the similar problems.
I pay my bills online... businesses want my money yet they make it so hard for me to pay them. The system crashes, there is a dead line if you don't pay by a certain date (because you cannot log in, and have no one to speak to you), they threatened to charge you more. I am trying to
pay them!!!!!!!!!! Their systems sucks... can I say this.

Module Two - Frustrations
It must be my lucky day.
About 'emails', you love them and you hate them.
If you don't take control they control you. I have learnt as much since starting this unit.
Emails have so many advantages but if you are not able to stay in control then they will be your worst nightmare.

Module Two - Email Tasks
- the sender's email address, domain name
- the receiver's email address, who it's copied towho it's blind copied to, the subject line - if not relevant to the message, perhaps it comes from an inexperienced user or spam
- may have an attachment which contains the body/content of the message, at the end of the message the signature conveys the identity of the sender, friend, foe, business, advertisement, work related, promotion etc...
- we can also find out at what address the email started and its route
- cc: when copying the message to others cc: to self, when keeping a copy of the message, bcc: is sending a blind copy (not seen by the addressee). It may not be a good practice as it shows that you are hiding something, bcc: to the boss, the opposition etc...
- bcc: may be a way of copying to many and the email addresses would not be available to all
- the reply all functions of email is necessary when actually replying to all addressees, to keep everyone in the loop of what is happeninga, so I would reply to the sender and cc: the others, not just send it to all
- unless known, always assume that the recepients do not have the latest OS, software or systems. If it is a Word document save it as a text file or an earlier version.
4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?
- I tend to manage my inbox manually and only have a filter for my Junk mail. Old habits are hard to break. There are lots of rules available in Outlook but I have never taken the time to find out how useful they could be, but hope to do so soon.
- below is an example of how I manage my folders: I have a folder for Technical Support, sub folder for the year, within that I record the date, customer name, the progress of the queries if still open or closed.

Module Two - Communicating to the Infosphere
I decided then to start the tasks in module two. I avoided printing the whole document, trying to be more responsible towards the environment. I read stuff, clicked all the links and ended up spending most of my time surfing the net, to where, I do not remember.
This morning I ended up doing the same thing, I got so distracted and ended up miles (what it this call in infosphere lingo), from where I started and cannot remember what I was trying to find out. I have certainly learnt something. I am a Twitter convert, I know what avatar is all about, I tried to create my avatar but failed, I know all about the Gmail options, I stumbled on the Your Guide to Virtual Worlds by Mark Glaser & From TerraNova blog: Augmented Mixed Reality - Real to virtual and back again by Ian Hughes .I still have not managed to start any of the tasks.

March 12, 2009 - Confused & losing it....
I am more confused than ever. I am stuck and cannot continue. I have done my tasks in Module I and don't seem to be able to advance further.
I have played with blogger and have changed and added few things on my blog, but unfortunately I possibly could not repeat what I have done.
I now have an icon, I think it is a feed...I have no idea how to reporduce this.
I added my own log in my 'followers' window and have no idea how to remove this.
I have cheked google help, blogger help and cannot work it out.
I am taking a break and will see more clearly, hopefully when I get back.

Module One - (Internet Tools) revisited
I read somewhere that someone had 30 odd hops and I only had 4. I decided to redo this task. Now I understand a little more, the difference between Traceroute & Ping. Traceroute traces the routes the packet takes to reach the different hosts.
The output from my Traceroute to curtin.edu.au and this time I got 18 hops.

Outcome anb reflections
Well, not too sure what to think. I have use the A-tool successfully. I am not sure when I will be needing such information. If I had to I could.
Output from PC A-Tool - Trace
Outcome & reflections
I use the Trace option and the output shows only the 'to' IP, time to the host and that it. My previous output from the dos command was more informative. I may have missed the Traceroute option does not seem to be available on the A-Tool.
Module One - Tasks FTP, Internet Tools
I used FileZilla to connect to recall.curtin.edu.au and downloaded the README file.
"according to the readme file, 'CAPITALIZATION MATTERS'.
Outcome & experiences
I have FileZilla already installed on my system. I did not have any problems linking and downloading from Curtin. This is a formidable tool and very much taken for granted nowadays. Only a few years ago, perhaps still happening now, in other parts of the world, we had to transfer the information onto tape or CD's, and dispatched by post or courier at a high cost.

Outcome & experiences
I appreciate that advanced users need to know this and I know it can be done, but I am not too impressed with finding out all that information, andcannot see the importance.
The IP NUMBER of the hostname curtin.edu.au is 134.7.180.137
Outcome & experiences
So far I have been able to ping the blackboard or curtin.edu.au. I have checked the discussion group for help but I am not getting anywhere.

March 8, 2009 - Realisation
My whole blog is a bit of a mess but I hope to get there eventually.
As I use MSWord most of the time, I thought it would be easier to type my blog in Word then copy and paste.
Unfortunately it does not work as I had hoped. I also wanted to have a copy as a backup, just in case I were to lose my blog. I guess this is not necessary.
I also tried to be more creative and less booring, as advised by my tutor, Peter. I ended up renaming the blog from 'ReneeLearningLog' to 'ReneeLearningLots' and in the process copied the wrong one on the discussion board. Guess what? Peter could not access it !>$#@!^

Module One - Task A, B
I followed the instructions and had a popup with the following message:
This link needs to be opened with an application
After several failures to access Telnet, I 'googled' Telnet and found the answer.
- Satrt>Run>Telnet and worked fine.

I got stuck when it asked me for my Curtin email address. I wanted to get it right the first time. I frantically looked for my email address and of course, I was logged out of Telnet.
I started all over again to find out that my first instructions were no longer correct.
I tried all the different keys and bang, I was in. The rest was easy. I have to admit; I have once, used such a system. Yes, I have been around a while. It was double Dutch to me at the time and still is now. No guessing with Telnet; It's very precise. Do as it says or you don't get anywhere. It was quite exciting when it actually worked. The way we communicate nowadays has come a long way.
...You've got something jammed in here real good
Pardon me sir...
I was once a Jedi Knight the same as your father.
Outcome & experiences -
I actually watched quite a bit of this...and thoroughly enjoyed it.
It brought back few memories. That is where it all started, what a journey. I am glad that I was somewhat part of it. What can be done nowadays blows the mind but its beginning was quite modest and open doors to the possibilities of what we have now, at our fingertips. Intelligent terminal like TELNET allowed access to the world and immensely improved communications. Before Telnet there were dumb terminals connected to a mainframe and before that, there were floppy disks, and before the floppies there were punched cards. The limitations were the processors speed, the memory required and physical hard disk space; all needed improvement.

My very first BLog - What an ordearl
What an ordeal. I thought that I would never get there. I am retyping my whole Word document that I have at last printed.
I have given up trying to find out where the problem was. I could not publish my Blog and the error popped up on my screen, bright yellow and red, each time I tried.
- I typed my Blog using a Word7 document, which I thought would be a sort of a backup, if I were to lose it in Blogger.
- I then tried to save my document in Word 97-2003, that did not work & the red and yellow banner appeared again on the top of my screen
- I saved my document in Plain Text
- I saved in Rich Text Format
Compose using Blog that all.
March 4, 2009 - Trying the not so serious
I added my profile to my blog. My original blog was very serious and very boring. After having browsed through all the blogs on the discussion board, I panicked. After having pondered my predicament, I decided a change of attitude to enjoy and have fun with my new discoveries.
I am still overwhelmed with all the information. OpenID, RSS etc...still don't know what it is all about.
What to do next?
I decided to attack the Module ! - Telnet task A

My top five tips for new bloggers
- Google 'Bloggers help', is very useful and more that is needed to start a blog.
- I would have saved a lot of time, if I had followed the step by step instructions of 'how to create a blog', YouTube video that is available in the 'Bloggers help' site.
- Use the Blogger text editor and not a Microsoft Word text editor. I encountered a lot of errors when I published my blog, due most likely by the hidden embedded characters from my word document.
- Just experiment and do it.
- I have learnt a lot by just being curious and giving it a go (but I am still confused).
This is my first experiment with blogging.
I am rather apprehensive broadcasting my thoughts to the Internet world. It is also a new and exciting venture.
I am competent using a computer; I thought I was. I find it not so easy to understand, the blogging that is.
It is sort of trial and error... then you eventually get there.
While 'playing' with my blog, I came across Picasa3, which I downloaded. I will be able to easily upload my photos to my blog.. (to be seen).
